Mobile Web 'to be worth $22bn by 2013'

Social interaction accessed via mobiles will be worth $22.4 billion (£12 billion) within five years, research suggests.

Web 2.0, the social aspect of the internet, was examined from a mobile perspective by Juniper, which published its findings in its latest report, Mobile Web 2.0: Leveraging Location, IM, Social Web & Search.

The strength of this sector is changing the shape of mobile web development, the company says.

Report author and research analyst Ian Chard said: "Combining the power of the social network map … with that of mobility, presents the greatest opportunity for revenue generation of any of the applications as defined within Juniper's Mobile Web 2.0 framework."

He defined the characteristics of Mobile Web 2.0 as who, how and where friendships were made and maintained.

Other findings include the suggestion that service revenues will account for the majority share of Mobile Web 2.0 revenues, though mobile advertising was an important opportunity.

The World Wide Web Consortium, also know as W3C, is holding an event called Workshop on the Role of Mobile Technologies in Fostering Social Development, in June in Brazil.
