Marks & Spencer wants to begin selling food on the internet, an executive at the supermarket chain has said.
Jim Waller, commercial director with the company, commented that Marks & Spencer may have missed a trick with its slow adoption of online strategies, reports the Telegraph.
The company is determined to make up for lost time and embrace selling online, Mr Waller told the audience at an industry event.
"We can't afford to bury our heads in the sand about online," the commercial director said.
He added that the retailer does not always achieve its aim of delivering the best products on the market "because we have been concentrating on other things for the past two years".
While it was said to be unlikely that Marks & Spencer would move into food e-commerce in the short term, the company is considering developing a service similar to Waitrose's Ocado system.
This would see the company sell food outside its own brand for the first time ever.
It has been three years since Marks & Spencer made a deal with Amazon that saw the multimedia online retail giant provide technology for its website.
