The managing director of an internet security awareness group has described social networking as a great way to meet people.
According to Get Safe Online's Tony Neate, websites like MySpace and Facebook do not pose a threat to users if they are used with care.
"I think the internet is a fantastic place for social networking but we just need to be aware of some of the issues that surround it," Mr Neate commented.
A joint initiative launched by the government, the Serious Organised Crime Agency and UK businesses, Get Safe Online is aimed at raising awareness of web security risks among small businesses and individuals.
The managing director explained that people need to turn their fear of identity theft and other security risks into awareness.
Social networking users were advised to only make their full profiles accessible to people they know and trust.
His comments followed a 2005 report from Jupiter Research which discovered that 39 per cent of web users deleted their cookies.
