American Airlines' new marketing tool has arrived in the form of a Facebook application, a new report reveals.
In a bid to hone its customer information gathering performance, the airline has launched Travel Bag, according to MediaPost.
The widget offers social networkers the opportunity to share tourism experiences and holiday tips with features including Trip-O-Vent, Travelogue and Favourites.
And the widget is being advertised through Windows Messenger and Hotmail, as well as online network Digg.com and a number of ad-buying networks.
Billy Sanez, American Airlines director of advertising, promotions and corporate communications, said: "We want to understand how consumers interact with one another."
However, he observes the peculiarity of Facebook applications as marketing techniques, admitting that there is "no controlling a widget" and companies have to invest their trust in viral marketing.
American Airlines was founded through the consolidation of a number of aviation companies in 1929.
