Product comparison sites could overtake general search to become online shoppers' first port of call, it has been claimed.
Michael Yang, founder and chief executive officer of US comparison shopping site Become.com, told MediaPost that the company's goal is to dominate the e-commerce landscape.
"I think a lot of people who try comparison shopping end up preferring that experience over general search," he told the publication.
Mr Yang added that the service provided by Become.com is "fundamentally" different to that offered by general search sites.
Citing comScore figures, the report notes that traffic to the site has increased by some 260 per cent year-on-year, boosted by its combination of user reviews and ratings, catalogue content and social networking components - shopping is "inherently social", according to Mr Yang.
Meanwhile, a recent report from Which? found that specialist retailers such as AbeBooks and Play.com are among the most popular for customer service among UK online shoppers.
