Plural and singular keywords 'operate differently'

Search terms and phrases exhibit different behaviours depending on whether they are singular or plural, it has been observed.
In a new post on the Hitwise blog, Robin Goad states that there are some interesting conclusions to be drawn by ranking the top ten search term suggestions for either 'laptop' or 'laptops'.
There is only one term on the list of singular terms that implies the user is searching in order to purchase a laptop, according to Mr Goad: 'cheap laptop'.
Of the other terms on the top ten singular key phrases, four represent laptop accessories such as 'laptop bags' or 'laptop accessories', while two - 'laptop reviews' and 'best laptop' - indicate that the user is in the early stages of the buying cycle.
Meanwhile, the majority of terms on the top ten searches containing the plural version - 'laptops' - indicate a web user is looking to make a purchase - for instance, 'laptops for sale', 'second-hand laptops' and 'refurbished laptops', he asserts.
In related news, head of operations at Technology Means Business Dr Adam Le Gresley said this week that web searches are a major way for people to begin their hunt for a business, product or service.
