Consumers looking for a specific product or service tend to begin their journey on search engines, it has been observed.
Dr Adam Le Gresley, head of operations at Technology Means Business, commented that building an online strategy is vital if businesses are to attract customers.
"Surveys have shown that a large number of people, when trying to locate a particular product or a specific business, will start off using a search engine," said Dr Le Gresley.
His comments follow the release of research from the Interactive Media in Retail Group, which found that 97 per cent of the UK online population have used e-commerce resources to make a purchase.
This compares to 85 per cent of the world's web population, a figure which has risen by 40 per cent in the last two years.
According to the head of operations, companies that fail to obtain a search engine listing or web presence will lose out to providers or companies that are easier to find.
