Ask.com has hit back at claims it is to give up its search business to focus on Q&A resources.
Reports this week have suggested that the company is to become a female-geared information service and shy away from the Google-dominated search sphere.
Spokesperson Nicholas Graham said such reports are "just plain wrong".
He explained that the company has decided to concentrate its online strategy on its core demographic, noting that a "sizeable group" of the firm's core audience is women who access the site for reference, health and entertainment news.
"We recognise that we can't be all things to all people, so we're focusing on our core group of users. We want to build up the kinds of answers those users are looking for, while at the same time remain a strong search site," he said.
Originally known as Ask Jeeves, the company was founded in California in 1996 and dropped the PG Wodehouse reference a decade later.
