Compulsory registration 'should be ditched'

Websites that compel users to register before viewing content are making a mistake, according to one sector publication.
A new article in E-consultancy observes that visitors to the Northern Rock site must register before viewing details about loans, mortgages and accounts, which it describes as "utter, utter madness".
Not only is the process lengthy, but the motivation behind it is unclear and from a search engine optimisation (SEO) perspective it is a bad idea, according to the report.
Other recommendations for the troubled lender's website include avoiding white text on a black background and adopting a more balanced approach to products and links on its homepage.
A search box could also improve usability, according to the report, which has been released following the government's revelation of its plans to nationalise the financial services provider.
Colour was earlier this week highlighted by the publication as an important factor in SEO.
