London is seeking to make itself more welcoming to all visitors through new website additions that focus on making the city easier for disabled travellers.

A new list of the most suitable places to stay in London for disabled visitors will be published on the Visit London website www.visitlondon.com/access, with the list containing around 1,000 'easily accessible hotel rooms', in 150 hotels across the capital.

James Bidwell, chief executive of Visit London, said: "London is the number one city destination in the world and we are continually working to improve the accessibility of the capital for all visitors.

"In addition to hotels, the 'accessible London' page on visitlondon.com also suggests how visitors can use London's public transport, theatres, attractions and shops more easily."

But while a site like Visit London's can provide travel information tailored for those who suffer disabilities, sites themselves can also optimise their features for greater accessibility to all.

Specific measures such as providing alternative text for graphics and facilitating the scaling up of text can make sites more accessible, with recent changes to the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act setting the same accessibility standards for websites as for other media.
