Independent and freelance work prospects have been revolutionised by the spread of broadband, it has been claimed.
Startup Co, an advisory and support group for new businesses, has claimed that contractual and freelance work have been boosted by the freedom and flexibility enabled by rapid home internet access.
With as many as 14,365,000 residential and business broadband connections reported in the UK by Ofcom, many companies and individuals are taking advantage by restructuring working patterns.
John De Groot, chief executive of Startup Co, said that because of increased broadband cover, "the entry to market is much easier now for people who want to work independently.
"If you think about only four years ago the broadband coverage was tiny and within the space of a few years it has gone from zero to almost 99 per cent coverage."
Reflecting on the spread of broadband it had registered, an Ofcom report backed up Start Co's claims, saying that the rise in widespread connections "has driven the development of converged services and devices".
