A beta version of Mozilla's new Firefox extension - which allows a web application to run as a desktop app - has been released.

Prism 1.0, a standalone web app, was launched on Friday and is "loaded with several nifty features" that may appeal to website design executives, according to the Register.

These include automated updates, tray icon support and application-specific settings.

And while standalone web apps can be run on any site using Google Chrome, the search engine's version does not offer the same range of add-ons as Mozilla's offering.

In addition, Prism 1.0 has a similar feature to the newest version of Firefox, which allows users to erase their web history when they use private browsing mode.

According to Mozilla Labs, Prism - formerly named Webrunner - is part of a series of experiments which intend to enhance the web platform with desktop apps.

The first experimental version of Prism was launched 18 months ago.
