New figures have suggested that use of the mobile web is continuing to grow worldwide.

According to usage figures for Opera's Mini browser for mobile devices, over 23 million people used the app to browse the mobile internet in March - representing a 157 per cent year-on-year increase.

Page views with Opera Mini have also soared by 255 per cent over the same period.

In total, 148 million MB of web data was served via the browser in March, a figure that would have approached the 1.4 petabyte mark if the data was uncompressed.

Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive of Opera, predicted that the mobile phone will soon become the main way in which most people access the web.

"As millions of people each month discover the web through Opera Mini, content providers have an incredible opportunity to seize competitive advantage in this new medium," he commented.

Vinton Cerf, one of the founders of the internet and chief internet evangelist at Google, said at a recent web conference in Spain that he believes it is likely more people will soon have their first online experience on the mobile web than on laptops, AFP reports.
