Online video is proving to be particularly popular Canada, according to new statistics.

Figures from comScore show that 21 million web users in the country watched over 3.1 billion online videos in February, representing almost 88 per cent of the overall Canadian online population.

This is the highest penetration out of the five countries examined by comScore in its video research, beating the likes of France, Germany, the UK and the US.

YouTube was the most popular online destination for video streaming in February, with Canadians watching more than 1.6 billion clips on the site.

Other video sites attracting high numbers of visits included Microsoft, Yahoo! and Megavideo.

"Canada's high broadband penetration and tech-savvy internet users make it an optimal environment for online video to flourish," remarked Bryan Segal, vice-president of sales for comScore Canada.

Last month, comScore reported a ten per cent year-on-year increase in the UK's online video viewing audience for January.
