Online marketing spending tipped to rise

A new survey has suggested that senior marketers expect to increase spending on online marketing significantly this year.
Conducted by Professor Christine Moorman of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and the American Marketing Association, the poll of 581 US marketers found that respondents expect to spend ten per cent more on their online strategy in 2009 than they did in 2008.
This is compared with an anticipated overall marketing expenditure increase of 0.5 per cent.
Professor Moorman said that it is likely business-to-consumer organisations will make the biggest shifts towards online marketing.
"The observed shift is part of a broader movement to the web and social media as key ways to reach customers," she explained.
"However, it also reflects marketers' hopes for improving return on marketing investment with a cheaper and more effective set of tools."
Online marketing spending is likely to rise by ten per cent in Europe this year, according to a recent report from Forrester Research.
