The UK needs to work more on the issues of inspiring public confidence in e-commerce transactions and internet security, according to the first minister for communications, technology and broadcasting.

Lord Stephen Carter said at the Joint Westminster eForum & Westminster Media Forum keynote seminar, Digital Britain, that as more people obtain high-speed access to the internet, web safety and clarity need to progress to keep up with demand.

The seminar took place last week to discuss what the government can do to drive growth of the UK's digital economy ahead of the publication of a major report on the topic later this month.

He added that businesses have just as big an interest in ensuring all Britons are able to take advantage of the digital world as the government.

"Digital inclusion is as important for businesses as it is for government, not least because if you leave it as a residual problem the end intervention ends up being more punitive," he said.

The UK's digital and communication sectors are worth a collective £52 billion annually, according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform.
