The search and advertising alliance between Facebook and Bing has been expanded, it has been announced.

According to Bing general manager Jon Tinter, the two companies will work together to bring more features from the search engine to users of Facebook, which will include "richer answers combined with tools that help customers make faster, smarter decisions".

This will mean more content beyond the usual search results returned to Facebook members via Bing's search technology, he explained in a blog post.

Furthermore, the partnership will be extended to cover other countries in addition to the US.

Microsoft will additionally hand over the responsibility for selling Facebook display ads to the social networking site.

"It just made more sense for them to take the lead on this part of their advertising strategy," Mr Tinter remarked.

The two firms first joined forces in 2006 and deepened their alliance further in the following year when Facebook sold a stake in its operations to Microsoft. They expanded the partnership again in October 2009.

Facebook currently has in the region of 400 million active users worldwide.
