A new study has revealed that Facebook is the most popular mobile website in the UK.

Research conducted by comScore on behalf of the GSM Association (GSMA) shows that the social networking website came out on top in December in terms of mobile unique visitors, page views and the total amount of time spent on the site.

Facebook attracted 4.98 million unique visitors during the month while registering 2.63 billion page views and 2.16 billion online minutes.

Its nearest competitor was Google in all three categories.

Overall, 15.9 million Britons accessed the mobile web in December. Almost 30 per cent of the total mobile internet audience was accounted for by smartphone users, who also represented 47 per cent of page views and 51 per cent of all time spent online.

"Mobile internet usage is accelerating, driven largely by the rise of smartphone devices, which are now used by one-fifth of the total UK mobile subscriber base," the GSMA said in a statement.

According to Facebook's own figures, over 65 million people worldwide access the site through a mobile phone.
