Retailers have been urged to take advantage of the growth of the mobile web by setting up an ecommerce site especially for the medium.

According to Graham Charlton of Econsultancy, there are many reasons why businesses should consider mobile ecommerce.

These include the fact that more people are using their handsets to get online, as well as the possibility that consumers will be drawn mobile ecommerce sites when shopping in physical stores.

Businesses can also take advantage of the relatively low website development costs associated with mobile content.

Furthermore, retailers may need to keep up with competitors who are establishing an online strategy in the mobile ecommerce space.

Mr Charlton adds: "The extra sales channel and exposure to customers shopping on the move means more sales from customers who simply cannot wait until they get home to make a purchase."

Last year, Amy Adams Harding of Google published a post on the Google Retail blog offering tips on how best to take advantage of mobile ecommerce.

She advised making websites easy to use and allowing consumers to quickly save and send searches from their mobile phones.
