New research has revealed that one-third of UK advertisers intend to spend between six and 20 per cent of their online marketing budgets on social media this year.

The study by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Opinion Matters showed that this is compared with 14 per cent of budgets being allocated to the medium last year.

While seven per cent of brands have not yet made use of social networking websites as part of their online strategy, 22 per cent have turned the channel into the focal point of their communications operations, while one-fifth use the medium in most campaigns.

Twitter marketing and social media monitoring were found to be the most popular uses of Web 2.0 sites and content.

Amy Kean, senior PR and marketing manager at the IAB, commented: "Our research has found that many brands, whilst rating social media as very important to their business, are still at the testing stage and hope to do more over the next 12 months."

Last year, comScore revealed that social networks account for over one-quarter of all online display ad impressions in the UK.
