It is important that more sports websites make use of social media in their online marketing campaigns, according to one expert.

Seth Liss, news community manager for the Sun-Sentinel's website, explained in a column for the publication that some sports fans have created blogs and Facebook pages that attract more traffic than official content produced by the teams or leagues themselves.

One organisation that has successfully taken advantage of the rise in popularity of social networking websites among sports fans is the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which interacts directly with fans via Twitter, blogs and other sites.

"I expect to see more leagues following the UFC model of interacting more with fans," Mr Liss remarked.

"As social media continues to grow, I expect sports leagues to lead the way businesses integrate the technologies."

Jalen Rose of Mashable recently claimed that the NBA's use of social media could be a lesson for businesses on the best way to engage customers through the medium.

He noted that the association utilises clear calls to action in its social media content, as well as offering fans a chance to voice their opinions and advertising its social networking activities through a variety of channels.
