The UK spends more than any of its European counterparts on online shopping, according to a new study.

Research carried out by the Centre for Retail Research (CRR) for Kelkoo shows that Britons spent £38 billion on purchases from ecommerce websites last year.

This is compared with German online spending of £29.7 billion and French expenditure of £22 billion.

According to the CRR, it is likely that British online sales will continue to rise, reaching £42.7 billion by the end of this year.

Bruce Fair, managing director of Kelkoo, commented: "This year is when we will really start to see online sales achieving a significant share of overall retail trade in the UK."

The IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index recently revealed that Britons spent £5.46 billion on internet shopping in December 2009, up 17 per cent compared with the same month in 2008 and representing a 3.8 per cent increase from November.
