Three in five Australian web users visited an ecommerce website in December 2009, according to figures.

Statistics from comScore show that over eight million people in the country used an online shopping site during the month, the highest monthly figure of the year and up three per cent on December 2008.

The most popular ecommerce websites were those belonging to Apple, Amazon, Coles Group, Woolworths and Shopping.com.

Overall, the computer hardware segment was the most visited online retail website sub-category.

Will Hodgman, executive vice-president for the Asia Pacific region at comScore, commented: "The online channel is an increasingly important component of retailers' holiday strategies, with a growing number of consumers turning to the web for comparison shopping and purchasing convenience."

Last year, comScore reported that more than seven in ten Australian web users make use of social networking websites.

The most popular social media sites in the country include Facebook, MySpace, Windows Live and Bebo.
