The potential of augmented reality for marketers has been described as "powerful" by an industry commentator.
In a blog post for Econsultancy, Tina Whitfield explained how augmented reality has considerable promise for location-based services.
She reported that this element of the technology is "reaching a new phase of development and distribution" and pointed out that it could be used for local search options.
Mobile augmented reality can even be carried out when network coverage is poor, according to Ms Whitfield.
She explained that metropolitan networks can be used if the carrier one is responding too slowly.
Ms Whitfield also noted how the first augmented reality appeared in the 1960s with Morton Heilig's Sensorama, a head-mounted display that let users experience the technology with all five of their senses.
A reporter for ReadWriteWeb, Marshall Kirkpatrick, has also predicted that the biggest advances in augmented reality are still to come.
"The bulk of the promise appears to be in the future," he wrote.
