Semantic bookmarking tool goes public

A bookmarking tool utilising semantic web technology has launched in public beta following nine months of private testing.

Zigtag works in a similar way to sites such as Delicious in that it allows users to save links to their favourite web content online and to share these with others if they wish.

However, where it differs from other services is in the way tags are applied to each bookmark.

Zigtag claims to be able to assign meaning to each link via tagging using semantic technology, allowing it to distinguish between two tags that may use the same phrasing but refer to two completely different subjects, for example.

Users can join groups based on shared interests that Zigtag identifies through its "intelligent" tags. The social media tool is available as a plug-in for Firefox and Internet Explorer 7.

According to Sarah Perez of ReadWriteWeb, while the tool has the potential to be one of the first Web 3.0 applications, it could go further by automatically assigning tags to bookmarks using semantic web technology.

"The only downside to Zigtag is that it requires you, the user, to manually insert the tags," she said.

"In fact, it even relies on user-generated tagging and has built its entire service around that concept."
