Britain's main terrestrial TV broadcasters are to join forces for a new online video service.
Putting aside ratings wars and their intense rivalry, the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV have affirmed that their joint video on demand (VOD) service will be ready to go live next year.
Web-surfers using the service will find a range of catch-up TV and archive material, which the new site will offer users on a rental or buy-to-own basis.
The companies announced: "By joining forces, the joint venture will access each broadcaster's understanding and experience of providing on-demand content and will be an important player in a new and developing market.
"It will compete in the rapidly expanding online content space, where it will compete against a large and growing range of TV, film and other audio-visual content."
As well as its online offerings, the broadcasters are consulting the Digital Television Group, operator of Freeview, about having the range of software preloaded into its set-top boxes.
