Augmented reality technology is something of "a rising star" in the current mobile web development sector, according to one expert.

Kieran Alger, web editor of T3.com, said it is likely more early adopters of the platform will emerge over the course of the next 12 months after several apps using the technology were launched in 2009.

However, he added: "Business adoption could take a couple of years, as consumers are not fully sold on augmented reality yet."

Mobile apps using augmented reality draw data from the web and apply it to content from the real world.

A recent report from Juniper Research indicated that 400 million augmented reality apps will be downloaded every year by 2014.

Some £449 million in revenue will be generated for businesses as a result of this activity, it said.

Fewer than one million augmented reality mobile apps were downloaded in 2009, according to the research firm.
