A research project funded by the European Union has developed a social semantic desktop that could pave the way to a broader semantic web, digital agency executives may be interested to note.

The Nepomuk scheme saw researchers develop a way of helping computer users to better find and organise information on their systems and share this data with a network of users by giving meaning to a range of files through annotation, regardless of their format.

According to the team behind the research, the resulting social semantic desktop could be applied to the internet to bring the notion of a semantic web closer to reality, ICT Results reports.

"In making data and connections between data easy to find and identify, the semantic desktop gives people a very personal motivation to start annotating their information," remarked Ansgar Bernardi, coordinator of the Nepomuk project.

He added that it is a "logical step" for this data to be shared, thus providing the basis for the semantic web.

The project began in January 2006 and is due to be completed in December this year.
