Google is currently not concentrating on semantic search as part of its wide-ranging operations, an executive at the search engine has said.
Speaking to Vator.tv in an interview, Google vice-president of search products and user experience Marissa Mayer said the company was "not focused" on natural language processing, although she added the search giant could obtain semantic-like qualities in other ways.
"When you get to extremely large amounts of data you see a precision that mirrors semantic search," she commented.
A number of Google's rivals have already started looking at how they can harness the semantic web as part of their online strategy.
Yahoo! announced earlier this year that it was starting to use the semantic web to offer more useful search results, while Microsoft acquired natural language company Powerset in June.
In October, Ask.com also added new semantic capabilities to its search service as part of an overall revamp of the offering.
