Website development teams may need to place a greater focus on making sites compliant with Firefox following new figures showing that the browser now accounts for over a fifth of the total market.
According to Net Applications, Mozilla's Firefox browser saw its market share top 20 per cent in two separate weeks during October for the first time, with Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) experiencing a drop to 71 per cent.
Dave Rosenberg of CNET News.com said that the figure represents a vital milestone for Firefox, as long as it is able to sustain its growth.
"Considering that IE hasn't been very interesting for quite some time, it would seem that Mozilla should be able to keep taking market share away from Microsoft," he remarked.
Meanwhile, Mozilla has revealed details of its forthcoming private browsing mode for Firefox 3.1 Beta 2, which will allow users to automatically turn off the storage of all private data such as website history and cookies to protect privacy.
