Online video is playing an important role in the campaigning for this year's US presidential election, a new study has found.

Carried out by Compete for networking technology company Cisco, the research revealed that online video website traffic has risen fivefold during this year's election period compared with 2004.

More than six in ten of the 1,800 registered voters polled said they regularly used the web as a source of political information and election coverage, while 30 per cent said the same about online video streaming in particular.

About 62 per cent of online video viewers said they followed the election closely, compared with 37 per cent of non-online video users.

"Visual networking is clearly playing a significant role in how American voters get political information and express their views," remarked Ken Wirt, vice-president of consumer marketing at Cisco.

The study followed a recent report from Ipsos MediaCT indicating that online video is now being enjoyed by a broader spectrum of web users than the initial early adopter user base of young males.
