A new tracking search engine unveiled this week could help website developers develop more consistent and compatible standards for internet sites, Opera Software has asserted.
The firm announced that its Metadata Analysis and Mining Application (MAMA) - a project which indexes the technology, style, scripting and markup used in the creation of web pages - could be a "dream come true" for web developers.
MAMA, which analyses data from some 3.5 million websites, can answer general and specific queries related to website specifications - such as "how many markup errors does the average web page have?" - and can examine web design trends and data to assist web developers in making changes for their clients.
Snorre M Grimsby, Opera Software's vice-president of quality assurance, stated: "MAMA's vast database provides us with detailed information about how Web technologies are used."
He added: "This is key in our efforts to test and ensure high-quality compatibility, stability and performance of our products and we want to share it with our peers, so they can benefit from it too."
Meanwhile, Brian Wilson of Opera Software wrote on dev.opera.com this week that the MAMA project has been in development since early 2004.
