Microsoft has announced the launch of an updated version of its Silverlight rich media platform.
Silverlight 2 offers new features such as .NET Framework support with a rich base class library and integrated controls such as DataGrid, ListBox, Slider, ScrollViewer and Calendar.
It also now includes deep zoom, cross-platform and cross-browser support and content protection in the form of digital rights management powered by PlayReady.
Furthermore, Microsoft said that it is expanding its support of the open source movement through two new initiatives, including development funding and new controls for developers using the Silverlight Control Pack.
"This release will further accelerate our efforts to make Silverlight, Visual Studio and Microsoft Expression Studio the pre-eminent solutions for the creation and delivery of media and rich internet application experiences," commented Scott Guthrie of Microsoft.
Last month, Mr Guthrie said that a future version of Silverlight will offer H.264 video and Advanced Audio Coding audio playback support.
