The internet is transforming the way in which fans consume media related to US high school sports, according to the Ventura County Star.

An "unprecedented" amount of exposure has resulted from increased use of the web to cover school sports and provide a social community for fans across the country, the newspaper said.

Furthermore, this is prompting some of the biggest companies operating in the sports media field to move into the local online school sports sector, with Sports Illustrated recently forming a partnership with high school sports social networking site TAKKLE.

Eric Fisher of SportsBusiness Journal said: "From the commerce side, advertisers want to get to that 16 to 25 age demographic and these sites, if done well, prove to be a really effective mechanism to do that."

US visits to sports websites soared by 26 per cent to over 93.3 million between August 2007 and 2008, according to recent figures from comScore.
