The European commission (EC) has revealed plans to make online and physical shopping easier for consumers across the European Union (EU), which may result in e-commerce firms having to make changes to their websites.

Aimed at simplifying the process of cross-border e-commerce within the EU, the proposals include calls for clearer information on prices and additional charges before a purchase is made and extra rights for consumers regarding late and non-delivery of goods.

The EC also said that it wants to establish new rights relating to cooling off periods, returns, refunds, repairs and guarantees, and unfair contract terms.

In addition, the EC is calling for existing legislation to be better adapted for the online medium, including strengthening protection for those buying goods via internet auctions.

"The single market has the potential to deliver a lot more choice and opportunities for consumers," said EU consumer commissioner Meglena Kuneva.

"But for that we need an EU-wide safety net of rights so consumers have the security they need to shop around with peace of mind."

Almost £4.4 billion was spent by UK consumers on internet purchases during August, according to figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.
