Internet sales will contribute over 50 per cent of total UK retail growth over the next four years, a new report has suggested.
According to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), online sales could grow to account for almost 15 per cent of the overall retail sector by 2012, rising from £20 billion today to £50 billion, the Times reports.
Speaking to the newspaper, Olivia Gillan, PwC retail partner, attributed the growing popularity of online shopping to improvements in e-commerce website development allowing consumers to benefit from the use of rich media such as video before making a purchase.
"The internet is growing because the quality of what you can now get there is much better," she commented.
According to the most recent IMRG-Hitwise Hot Shops List, the most popular online retailers among UK web users in August included Amazon UK, Argos, Play.com and Tesco.com.
Electrical and fashion retailers performed particularly well during the month, according to the report.
