Search marketing 'to outperform total online ad industry'

The search engine marketing sector will see growth greater than that in the wider online marketing industry this year, it has been predicted.
A new forecast from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has drawn upon data from the Advertising Association to suggest that spending on search engine marketing will surge by 30 per cent in the UK by the end of 2008.
This is compared with 20 per cent for all online advertising - a figure that has dipped significantly since last year, PwC said, according to Media Week.
Nevertheless, the online marketing industry will continue to fight back against the current economic downturn this year, it concluded.
"The search segment benefits from its ability to demonstrate clear return on investment, which will be an increasingly important feature in a downturn and therefore we expect to see growth above the online market average," PwC said in the report.
Earlier this year, a survey by E-consultancy suggested that there is optimism in the digital agency sector about its prospects for the next year, despite fears over a looming recession.
