A new mobile phone that is the first to be powered by Google's Android platform has been unveiled by T-Mobile.

The HTC-manufactured T-Mobile G1 handset is being touted as a step forward for mobile web browsing, with the phone featuring a full HTML browser with a zoom facility and the ability to connect to the internet via 3G, Edge and Wi-Fi connections.

Users can make use of a touch-screen, trackball and Qwerty keyboard to get around their phone and the internet, as well as access Google search and a number of other applications quickly and easily.

The Android operating system was first announced late last year and will be made open source by the end of 2008. The phone will be launched in the UK in November.

Developers creating applications for the platform will be able to make their work available via a beta version of the Android Marketplace in due course.

"Everyone will be free to adopt and adapt the technology as they see fit," said lead Android product manager Erick Tseng on the Official Google Blog.

"By doing so, we hope that users will get better, more capable phones with powerful web browsers and access to a rich catalogue of innovative mobile applications."
