While Flash as a website development technology is known to have its pitfalls, there are a number of sectors in which it is ideal to use, an expert has said.

Writing for Ecommerce-Guide.com, journalist Helen Bradley noted that Flash can be effective when it comes to the high technology sector and in areas where it is vital to be able to display a certain level of creativity.

These could include the fashion, graphic design and gaming industries, she commented, although web designers should note that Flash is best used when content does not have to be regularly amended.

"If you are considering using Flash on your website, ask yourself whether it will really help you to get your message across to your audience and whether the same effect could be achieved in another way," Ms Bradley advised.

She went on to urge developers to optimise websites for fast loading of Flash pages and to ensure that users can continue to navigate these parts of the site using normal browser controls such as the 'back' button.

While search engines have previously been unable to crawl Flash content for ranking purposes, Adobe announced earlier this year that it is working with Google and Yahoo! to make this possible.
