Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the man credited with inventing the World Wide Web, has announced the launch of a new initiative to open up the benefits of the internet to the whole of the world's population.

The World Wide Web Foundation will undertake research and development activities to make it easier for all people to use the internet for purposes such as e-commerce, communications, knowledge sharing and more.

It will bring together a number of communities, governments, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders and will seek to fund important projects in the areas of research, technology and social development.

Initially, the foundation will concentrate on global communities that are currently underserved when it comes to internet access.

"Through this new initiative, we hope to develop an international ecosystem that will help shape the future web. A more inclusive web will benefit us all," Sir Tim said.

The inventor recently told the BBC that he had concerns over how the internet can be used to spread misinformation, suggesting that a website labelling system may help to combat this.
