A new trend has recently emerged in the field of online reputation management - developing new websites to handle rumours and speculation that put the company in a negative light.
This is according to Brand Republic, which reports that General Motors has become the latest organisation to launch a new site to clarify major issues that have been subject to gossip over the years.
Visitors to gmfactsandfiction.com will find a list of myths about the company countered by General Motors' response to each of these.
This follows on from the launch of similar websites from McDonald's and Innocent Drinks in the UK as part of their online strategy, Brand Republic noted.
"Things consumers are saying to each other and post are not always accurate," commented Nate Elliott, research director at JupiterResearch.
"It's in the company's interest to post their side of the message."
The market for online reputation monitoring services in the UK will be worth £60 million this year, according to E-consultancy.
