Web 2.0 apps 'need open-minded management'

Businesses looking to integrate Web 2.0 elements into their websites need to ensure they exert a certain level of control over these applications, an expert has said.
According to Customer Carewords founder and chief executive Gerry McGovern, it is not enough to simply develop a wiki or blog and leave users to build their content.
He explained that the nature of social media means that a certain amount of useless content will make its way to a company's website or intranet, meaning that management is required to keep these portals useful.
However, Mr McGovern called on companies to ensure they undertake the right sort of management to make their social media channels successful.
"To manage in the Web 2.0 world is to converse, to listen, to be honest and upfront, to collaborate, to moderate and constantly watch out for the trends and patterns that always emerge when many minds mingle and mix in the network," he stated.
Last month, US research firm Gartner published a report predicting that Web 2.0 technologies such as social computing platforms and microblogging could have a "transformational" effect on businesses in two to five years' time.
