The number of UK households with internet access has risen by more than 1.2 million in the last year.
This is according to new figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which showed that nearly 16.5 million households now have access to the web.
Almost seven in ten of those who have used the web recently access the internet every day or almost every day, the research also indicated.
Households located in the south-east were found to be the most likely to have home-based internet access, with those in the north-east being the least likely.
Furthermore, educated Britons are generally more likely to have an internet connection at home compared with those with no formal qualifications, the ONS noted.
Other trends detailed in the report that may be of interest to the website design sector included the finding that male web users tended to be more interested in communications and audiovisual content, although blogging was more popular for women.
Lower broadband costs are helping more British households to connect to the internet, according to a recent Ofcom study.
