A new report has suggested a significant proportion of businesses intend to maintain or increase investment in digital channels such as websites, social media and advertising despite the economic downturn.
Intelligence platform provider StrategyEye Digital Media surveyed more than 200 digital media decision-makers and found that three-quarters of respondents either already have or plan to build social community elements into their website design.
Three in five executives indicated an expectation of spending more on social media in the next year, while 56 per cent predicted the same for the mobile medium.
Meanwhile, the report pinpointed the semantic web as a major factor in the evolution of the search engine market in the near future, with 78 per cent of firms involved in search indicating that the semantic web is playing an important part in service development.
"This major survey of attitudes going forward in digital media shows that despite continuing economic drift following the credit crunch, there remains continuing investment and expectation of returns from digital marketing channels," commented Jeremy Phillips, co-founder and chief operating officer of StrategyEye.
A recent JupiterResearch study suggested that a growing number of US retailers are turning to social media to attract teenagers and young adults as the back-to-school season gets underway.
