Spending on internet shopping rose by 11.3 per cent last month, new research has revealed.
The latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index indicated that online expenditure reached £4.8 billion in July, contrasting with recent British Retail Consortium figures showing a 0.9 per cent fall in high street sales last month.
According to the new report, the clothing, footwear and accessories segment saw the greatest increase in sales, driven by the high demand traditionally generated by the summer holiday season.
The electrical e-commerce category also performed well due to the recent launch of Apple's iPhone 3G.
"Online retailers are taking full advantage of the present situation by making exceptional offers on their websites, with online sales now in full swing and UK shoppers using the web to search out those bargains, compare prices and ensure they get the best deals," said Jo Evans, managing director of IMRG.
Price comparison and switching website uSwitch.com recently predicted that online sales will account for more than 50 per cent of total retail sales by 2026.
