Retailers that operate online would do well to ensure that consumers can easily access their websites via the mobile internet, according to new research from BT.
The organisation polled users of the Broadband Anywhere BT ToGo smartphone and found that a significant proportion of these consumers utilise their handsets to look for shopping bargains online.
One-fifth of those surveyed called for more e-commerce sites to be specifically designed for mobile users, with 39 per cent stressing the need for a simple navigation system.
About 25 per cent of respondents said they wished to see pages load faster on websites accessed with their mobile handsets.
BT futurologist Ian Neild stated: "People want fit-for-purpose content that offers as sophisticated an experience on their handheld device as they're used to on their PC.
"At the current rate, many businesses are in danger of being caught on the hop."
The first three months of this year saw 12.9 per cent of mobile users in the UK utilise their handsets to surf the web, according to Nielsen Mobile.
