Web accessibility 'still an issue for retailers'

A number of the UK's biggest retailers still need to do more to improve website accessibility for users with disabilities, it has been claimed.
Retail Bulletin commissioned a study to be carried out by Sitemorse to examine the performance of the top 100 retail websites in the UK, with the findings suggesting that some sites continue to fail disabled web users.
The research showed that the Co-op website fared particularly badly when it came to accessibility, failing all of the related tests.
Lawrence Shaw of Sitemorse said: "The Co-op focuses on ethical policies and supporting communities but every page fails the tests, which is not very good."
The study also indicated that basic issues such as broken links, missing images and failing to include page titles for search engine optimisation purposes could be easily fixed by the lowest performing sites.
Graham Charlton of E-consultancy recently claimed that websites neglecting to address accessibility could be missing out on a significant market.
