The rise of online fraudsters means that businesses must do all they can to keep their e-commerce websites safe and secure, according to experts speaking to SC Magazine.
Ken Munro of testing company SecureTest told the publication that up to half of all of the e-business websites it tests for security contain at least vulnerability, advising companies to start securing their sites during the website design process to avoid this.
As well as hacker attacks, e-commerce organisations are also under threat by the growth of phishing, according to Donal Casey of systems integration company Morse.
Jonathan Etheridge, lead IT security analyst at HSBC, said that the bank had responded to the dangers posed by phishing emails sent to its customers by using VeriSign's Extended Validation secure socket layer to inform website visitors whether the site is genuine or not.
Mr Casey stated: "However devious and greedy the attack, it's your website and your responsibility. The public will see it that way and so should you."
Earlier this year, IMRG's E-Customer Service Index revealed that customer satisfaction with e-retail websites is high, with 78 per cent stating that they are happy with the overall level of service provided by e-commerce sites.
Eight in ten respondents also said they were satisfied with the usability of online shopping sites.
