Businesses must make sure they use colour in the right way when engaging in website design, according to one expert.

Chris Lake, editor of E-consultancy, wrote on the website's blog that while it is up to the designer to pick the right colour scheme, there are a number of useful guidelines that can also help.

Among his tips was the advice to ensure that the website's colours do not interfere with accessibility and usability and to bear in mind that about one in ten people have impaired vision.

Mr Lake also advised web designers to ensure text and backgrounds contrast sharply when it comes to colour, avoid laying text on patterned backgrounds and make good use of white space to make pages easier to look at.

Designers could also benefit from considering the cultural connotations of different colours, using rich colours for important objects such as 'buy now' buttons and utilising web-smart colours to ensure the site can be viewed across different browsers and platforms.

According to the World Wide Web Consortium, web developers should bear in mind that colours can be perceived differently depending on the person, particularly in the context of surrounding objects and what that person may have looked at previously.
