New standards relating to web development for mobile devices have been launched by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
The guidelines are gathered under the banner of Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0 and cover topics such as dealing with a wide range of hardware and software platforms and the limitations associated with mobile internet bandwidth.
Details are offered on issues such as the scrolling of pages and data input. W3C also announced the development of a new tool enabling web designers to test their mobile sites.
"Mobile web content developers now have stable guidelines and maturing tools to help them create a better mobile web experience," said Dominique Hazael-Massieux, mobile web activity lead at W3C.
The organisation also revealed that it is looking at areas such as developing mobile applications and the standardisation of mobile markup languages.
Mobile internet penetration currently stands at 12.9 per cent in the UK, according to figures released by Nielsen Mobile earlier this month.
